Whispering Angel Rose 2024

Whispering Angel Rose 2024

Is this the best Whispering Angel ever?  Probably. Chateau d'Esclans' Whispering Angel 2024 Rosé is a dry, refined wine with a pale salmon hue, featuring a delicate nose of fresh strawberries, white peach, and citrus blossom. The palate offers notes of wild berries, cherries, pink grapefruit, and stone fruits with a silky, soft texture and vibrant acidity.  There's more weight and extract than in the 2023 (a very tricky year), and it finishes with a clean, elegant finish of summer fruits, minerals, and crisp pomegranate.

Having scored 17/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, it’s arguable that Whispering Angel has achieved its goal of making “the greatest rosĂ© on the planet”.  Has it been hyped? Definitely. Does it live up to the hype? Undoubtedly. With the Whispering Angel Rose, you seem to get a little bit more of the good stuff. A little more strawberry and cherry fruit.  A little bit more power and concentration. A little bit more refinement and a smile that’s a little bit wider after the first sip. Global demand for Whispering Angel is crazy, and price rises seem inevitable, so stock up now while you can.

Vivino Rating: 4.1 (Apr 2024)

'As I talked with Sacha, he let me into a secret.  He thinks 2024 is one of the finest vintages he has ever seen in Provence.  And, if this wine is anything to go by, he is right.  This is a seamless, languid, soothing Whispering Angel with terrific balance and immediate appeal.  Sometimes, this wine takes a couple of months to get into its stride.  Sometimes, it misses summer altogether, falling into equilibrium in time for turkey at Christmas, although I suspect no one notices or even cares!  In 2024, it is impeccable from the off.  This is justifiably the most famous / best value rosĂ© in the world, and if anyone still thinks otherwise, one sip of this beguilingly lip-smacking wine will change their minds – Chapeau!

About Chñteau d’Esclans

ChĂąteau d’Esclans is located on an exceptional site, on elevated land near the Gorges de Pennafort, twenty-five kilometres northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast. The first traces of the chĂąteau’s site date back to the times of the Gauls, during which its location served as a lookout point to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus. The chĂąteau’s cellar structure or foundation (known today as the oldest in the region) housed an original ChĂąteau that was given by the Comte de Provence to GĂ©rard De Villeneuve, in 1201. The current chĂąteau, inspired by Tuscan Villa design, was built during the mid 19th century.

An emblematic estate producing high-quality roses,  since its acquisition in 2006 by Sacha Lichine, who is a member of one of the great families of Bordeaux,  he's achieved his ambitious vision of orchestrating the 'Renaissance of Rosé'.  The estate has succeeded in transforming the image of rosé wine, now associated with the lifestyle of Saint-Tropez.
